Purpose and Origin

The Community Events Implementation Plan: 2025–2029 accompanies the Events Policy Framework and outlines the goals and actions the Council will undertake to develop, produce, and support community events in Christchurch.

This is an operational document with a five-year timeframe and a three-year review cycle. It is based on the Events Policy Framework, adopted by the Council in 2017.
(For more information, see: Events Policy Framework).

Timing

This information session is expected to last for 20 minutes.

Outcome Sought

The purpose of this session is to socialise the Community Events Implementation Plan with elected members.

ELT Consideration

This report has not been considered by ELT.

Next Steps

·      The Community Events Implementation Plan is operational and is underpinned by support and collaboration across Council teams.

·      It will be publicly available on the Council’s website.

Key points / Background

·    To support the development of the Community Events Implementation Plan, the Events & Arts Team, with assistance from the Research & Monitoring Team, commissioned a resident survey through Dynata.

·    The survey aimed to understand how residents feel about the events the Council produces and sponsors, who attends these events, what aspects residents value most and overall perceptions of Christchurch’s events calendar.

·    814 Christchurch and Banks Peninsula residents aged 18 and over participated. The survey was randomised and statistically representative.

·    Insights from the research have directly informed the five-year Community Events programme, helping determine what the Council should continue, develop, stop, or start.

·    There are three key goals that underpin the Community Events Implementation Plan, each goal has a specific action plan. The three goals are:

Goal 1 - Deliver a dynamic events portfolio that can evolve alongside community and industry needs.

Goal 2 - Enable partnerships that empower the industry to deliver uniquely Ōtautahi community events.

Goal 3 - Position Ōtautahi as an events powerhouse by promoting best practice and boldly champion and advocate for the industry and our environment.

Earlier this year, the Draft Plan was presented to Community Boards for feedback before being finalised.
