Background |
Scheme for Mairehau Route upgrade (CPMS 17051)
The aim of this route improvement project is to deliver an urban collector route with safe modes of travel for all road users. The improvements will be delivered in 3 phases. First Phase This work is a consent condition for the Prestons residential subdivision to service the development along the north side of Mairehau Road. The upgrades required for the development were recently completed with 2 new intersections at Prestons Park Drive and Aviemore Ave. Second Phase This work is to complete the remaining work along the South side of the road and linking the section of road from Snelling Drain to Concorde Place. This upgrade has commenced and due for completion in July 2025. Third Phase This upgrade is between #2 Drain and the Marshland Road intersection, plus a shared path along Marshland Road between Mairehau Road and QEII Drive. This connects the first phase works to Marshland Road and QEII Drive. There are physical constraints along Mairehau Road with waterways on both side of the road, and elevation differences that create some challenges for the outcome of the scheme this has resulted in insufficient space to provide on-road cycle lanes. In lieu of on-road cycle lanes, this scheme has a shared path on the north side of the road to service the cyclists travelling west - east direction. A new retaining wall averaging 1.8m in height will be constructed to support both the shared path and the carriageway. It is also intended to make minor changes to the Marshland Road/Mairehau Road signalised intersection to accommodate North/South cycle and pedestrian crossing facilities, and link the Mairehau Road shared path to the planned shared path on Marshland Road connecting to QEII Drive.
Prestons Road The granting of Resource Consent RMA/2024/460 (including the planned Mitre10 Mega) requires the need to alter the current road layout to support in development for the “Commercial Core Zone”. To service this land development, alteration to existing road elements are required for traffic safety reasons and ensure the function of this minor aerial network is not unduly compromised. The changes proposed include: - realignment of a section of kerb and channel on the southern side in order to accommodate a right turn bay into the commercial development, - central islands accommodating tree plantings and restricting the eastern entrance to left in/left out, - Improved pedestrian crossing at existing Prestons/Te Korari traffic lights (upgrading the cycle only crossing to a pedestrian + cycle crossing), - Alteration of bus stop locations. |
Key Issues |
Mairehau Road · First phase completed. · Second phase under construction at present, expected completion July 2025. · Third phase in design stages. Prestons Road · Road frontage changes as a result of the consented activity for the commercial core zone. |
Next Steps |
· Reports to the Board for approval at a later date. |
