1. Purpose and Origin of the Report Te Pūtake Pūrongo
1.1 The purpose of this report is to inform members of the Akaroa Museum Advisory Committee about activity at the Museum.
2. Officer Recommendations Ngā Tūtohu
That the Akaroa Museum Advisory Committee:
1. Receive the information in the Akaroa Museum Director's Update Report.
3. Brief Summary
3.1 Visitor
numbers to the Museum for the first six months of the year are tracking at a
similar
level to last year, with some unders and overs (refer to attached chart Akaroa
Museum Visitor Numbers, July-December 2024). More than 14,000 people
have passed through the door year to date.
3.2 Work continues on the conservation of a newly acquired artwork, a painting of Akaroa Harbour by John Gibb dating from 1895. This work was donated to the Museum by a descendant of the artist and its conservation and reframing is being funded by the Friends of the Museum.
3.3 The Friends have also recently purchased at auction for the Museum a rare piece of jewellery, a silver and whalebone pin in the form of a whaling harpoon with the word ‘Ikolaki’ attached. Although it is of unknown provenance, its clear association with the Ikoraki (sometimes known as Ikolaki) whaling station on the southern side of the Peninsula gives it some considerable significance locally.
3.4 At the request of the Ōnuku Rūnanga, the Takapūneke exhibition, He Ara Roimata ki te Anamata – Takapūneke, our journey, our survivance, was shown again at Ōnuku on Waitangi Day. The Museum’s Collections Manager worked with the members of the rūnanga to install the exhibition in the wharenui prior to Waitangi Day.
3.5 The Museum’s summer exhibition, The Measure of Things, drawing from its own collection a variety of objects that relate to the theme of measurement, has been well received by visitors.
3.6 Another family history has been published recently, with the Museum hosting the launch function on 24 March 2025. The book documents the history of the Haylock family, who arrived in Akaroa on the Monarch in April 1850.
