Purpose of Report

1.1      The purpose of this report is for the Coastal-Burwood Community Board to consider an application for funding from its 2016/17 Discretionary Response Fund from the organisations listed below.

Origin of Report

1.2      This report is to assist the Community Board consider two applications for funding from the Christchurch Music Education Trust and Eastern Community Sport and Recreation.

2.   Significance

2.1      The decisions in this report are of low significance in relation to the Christchurch City Council’s Significance and Engagement Policy.

2.1.1   The level of significance was determined by the number of people affected and/or with an interest.

2.1.2   Due to the assessment of low significance, no further community engagement and consultation is required.

 

3.   Staff Recommendations

That the Coastal-Burwood Community Board Recess Committee:

1.        Approves a grant of $1,604 to Christchurch Music Education Trust towards The Jam Youth event.

2.        Approves a grant of $9,000 to Eastern Community Sport and Recreation towards the $2 Pool Project.

1.   Purpose and Origin of Report

Purpose of Report

1.1      The purpose of this report is for the Coastal-Burwood Community Board to consider an application received for the Board's 2016/17 Youth Development Fund.

1.2      There is currently $4,000 remaining in this fund.

Origin of Report

1.3      This report is to assist the Community Board consider an application for funding from Ruby Kitchen.

2.   Significance

2.1      The decision in this report is of low significance in relation to the Christchurch City Council’s Significance and Engagement Policy.

2.1.1   The level of significance was determined by the number of people affected and/or with an interest.

2.1.2   Due to the assessment of low significance, no further community engagement and consultation is required.

 

3.   Staff Recommendations

That the Coastal-Burwood Community Board Recess Committee approves a grant of $500 from its 2016/17 Youth Development Fund to Ruby Kitchen towards Christchurch School of Gymnastics American Development Tour February 2017.

 

 

4.   Applicant – Ruby Kitchen

4.1      Ruby Kitchen is an 11 year old who lives in South Shore, Ruby will turn 12 years old on the 16 February 2017 (during the competition).

4.2      Ruby has been selected by the Christchurch School of Gymnastics as part of a squad of 12 young women artistic gymnasts who will attend a development tour in America in February 2017.  The gymnasts will be competing in two high level competitions, the WOGA Classic in Dallas (17-19 February) and the Houston National Invitational in Galveston (24-26 February).

4.3      These competitions are two of the largest competitions in the United States, attracting top gymnasts from the US and around the world.  The team will also have the opportunity to train at different gyms while in Texas, experiencing different training conditions and environments.

4.4      This tour will give the gymnasts the opportunity to see what they need to do to achieve at a high level.  It will also provide an opportunity for the Clubs current junior international stream gymnasts to compete in an International level competition which is important as they work towards gaining international experience towards qualifying for the Commonwealth Games in 2018. 

4.5      Ruby is a member of the senior training squad at Christchurch School of Gymnastics where she trains for 26 hours per week.  She has been attending gymnastics since she was 4 years old.  The squad members range in age from 11 to 14 years and in levels from Step 6 to Junior International.  The gymnasts will be accompanied by two coaches and 6 parent helpers.  The coaches’ costs will be covered by the gymnasts.

4.6      Ruby states that the reason she loves gymnastics as it has taught her to be physically and mentally strong which has helped her immensely with other sports and with her studies.

4.7      Her short term goal when she competes in the United States is to come within the top twenty in the competition.  Her long term goal is to represent New Zealand and to gain a sporting and academic scholarship in America.

4.8      The squad have done a significant amount of fundraising, with currently $7,300 raised using a variety of methods.  They aim to raise a further $2,500 by February.  This will cover the cost of the coaches and also go towards the accommodation or rental transport.  In addition to team fundraising, each girl has been doing their own individual fundraising.
